Volunteer participants should meet at Monterey Lanes located at 2161 North Fremont Street in Monterey at 8:30 a.m. Complimentary coffee and Monterey Donuts will be served prior to walking the North Fremont District of Monterey to pick up litter to help beautify the area. To help the community and the environment, the North Fremont Business District of Monterey is also being proactive in its efforts to collect electronic waste. There will also be an e-Waste drop off coordinated by Hope Services from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
About the eWaste Collection by Hope Services
The eWaste collection provides local residents and businesses with an opportunity to safely unload their old computers, television sets, monitors and other outdated, unusable or unwanted electronic items for proper recycling. The recyclable items can include the following e-waste (working or not):
TV/CRTs, Flat Screen TVs and Monitors (21 inches or smaller), Laptops and CPUs.
It is illegal to simply throw an old television or computer monitor or other e-waste in the trash in the state of California. Electronic items have toxic elements like lead and mercury in them that are environmentally hazardous when they are dumped into landfills. By law, such products must now be recycled properly and in ways that won’t harm the environment. The electronics collected will then be trucked away and recycled by Hope Services.
Each year in California, hundreds of thousands of computers, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions and other electronic items are replaced by newer, more advanced equipment. It is estimated that up to 75 percent of these outdated electronics are in storage because people don't know what to do with them.
