Craft Brewing is still going strong! Here’s some great statistics:

Craft brewers are still growing strong! According to the Brewers Association, craft brewer sales continued to grow at a rate of 4% by volume, reaching 13.2% of the U.S. beer market by volume. Craft production grew the most for microbreweries.

Microbreweries contributed 80 percent of the craft category’s total growth, up from 60 percent in 2017.

Brewpubs had a solid year—up 13 percent, accounting for about 20 percent of total growth.

Retail dollar sales of craft increased 7%, up to $27.6 billion, and now account for more than 24% of the $114.2 billion U.S. beer market.

Total U.S. Breweries have grown from 3,860 in 2014 to 7,450 in 2018, with a 13.2% increase from 2017 to 2018.

Around half of the brewery openings in 2018 (more than 500 total) occurred in ten states, which collectively represent more than half the 21+ population in the U.S.

California again saw the most brewery openings, and that’s before we get the final state production list and undoubtedly find more.

More about craft brewers:

An American craft brewer is a small and independent brewer.

Small

Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to a brewer according to rules of alternating proprietorships.

Independent

Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.

Brewer

Has a TTB Brewer’s Notice and makes beer.

The following are some concepts related to craft beer and craft brewers:

Craft brewers are small brewers.

The hallmark of craft beer and craft brewers is innovation. Craft brewers interpret historic styles with unique twists and develop new styles that have no precedent.

Craft beer is generally made with traditional ingredients like malted barley; interesting and sometimes non-traditional ingredients are often added for distinctiveness.

Craft brewers tend to be very involved in their communities through philanthropy, product donations, volunteerism and sponsorship of events.

Craft brewers have distinctive, individualistic approaches to connecting with their customers.

Craft brewers maintain integrity by what they brew and their general independence, free from a substantial interest by a non-craft brewer.

The majority of Americans live within 10 miles of a craft brewer.

Retail dollar sales of craft increased 7%, up to $27.6 billion, and now account for more than 24% of the $114.2 billion U.S. beer market.
