More information about the authors:

David L. Anderson

Dr. David Anderson is professor of history emeritus at CSUMB and was a senior lecturer of national security affairs at NPS. His book Vietnamization: Politics, Strategy, Legacy is a blend of memoir and historical research that explores the political and strategic implications of Nixon’s Vietnamization policy that eased antiwar political pressure on his administration but failed as a military strategy to enable South Vietnam to defend itself. Despite the unsuccessful outcome in Vietnam, U.S. leaders followed a similar strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan that proved ineffective for similar reasons. Dr. Anderson is the author or editor of 11 previous books, including The Columbia History of the Vietnam War and The Lowdown:  A Short History of the Origins of the Vietnam War. He is a past president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Professor of History Emeritus, California State University, Monterey Bay

Raquel Alva Gardea

Raquel Alva Gardea is a native Californian who has lived in the Monterey/Salinas area for over 24 years.  She has had a successful career in interior design and visual merchandising, but has always felt like a "frustrated inventor". Inspiration for this Story Set came from her then 5-year old son Nathaniel. "A few years back, my son asked, 'Mommy how come Christmas trees don’t grow candy canes?'  Thinking quickly I replied 'Yes, Christmas trees DO grow candy canes!'  I then worked to develop a prototype our own Christmas Tree that year. On Christmas morning Nathaniel awoke to see our tree with candy canes seeming to grow right out from its limbs. You should have seen the smile on his face!  Along with the accessories for the tree, I developed a children's story to explain it. That’s how this Story Book set When the Christmas Tree Grew Candy Canes came to be.
