Dali17 to recreate history with a fabulous gala event in Monterey!
October, 2016, MONTEREY, CA – Creating its own “over the top” fundraiser event, Dali17 at the Museum of Monterey is celebrating the 75th anniversary of "A Surrealistic Night in an Enchanted Forest," a costumed fundraiser hosted by Salvador Dali at the Del Monte Hotel in Monterey, on Sept. 2, 1941. The legendary surrealistic evening was attended by guests such as Bob Hope and Gloria Vanderbilt, and included animals from the San Francisco Zoo, bizarre decorations, costumes inspired by both dreams and children of the forest. According to Barbara Briggs-Anderson who wrote a book about this legendary party, “Dali worked his magic and cast a spell through his imaginative and innovative fantasy party of the century that will be remembered for years to come.”
A short newsreel of the 1941 event can be found HERE.
The 75th anniversary benefit event commemorating Dali’s “Party of the Century” will be hosted by Dali17 on Friday, October 28, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. at 5 Custom House Plaza in Monterey, CA. This incredible 4-course dinner party will reinvent a legendary historic event with a modern twist. Transformed into an enchanted forest dream-like environment, the Dali17 Museum will feature dazzling décor, beautiful costumes, short films, live animals, a gourmet dinner and signature cocktails, great entertainment, a Live and Silent Auction and many surprises throughout the night. There will also be an After Party from 9:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. at the Dali17 Museum. Guests are encouraged to wear Halloween and surrealistic costumes. The 75th Anniversary of “A Surrealistic Night in an Enchanted Forest” is a fundraiser event and in keeping with Salvador Dali’s passion and support for animals and the zoos caring for them, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Monterey Zoo (a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, Federal Tax ID# 26-0391615).
According to Dali17 founder, Dmitry Piterman, “We are very pleased to recreate one of the most famous parties of the last century which reflected Salvador Dali’s unique and highly creative vision. We are planning a fantastic evening for the community and the ultimate Halloween party!”
Dali17 opened to the public on July 8th 2016, and is the largest private collection of art by Salvador Dalí in the United States. The collection is the first to be exhibited permanently on the West Coast and includes over 580 lithographs, etchings, mixed media, tapestries and rare sculptures.
The private collection's name Dali17 ties Dali’s influence and history to the original 17 Mile Drive, where he lived and worked throughout the 1940s. While living in the Monterey area, Dali was heavily involved in the social art scene. As an early Carmel Art Association member, he exhibited vintage-sourced photographs and generously gave his time to help jury competitive art exhibitions for high school students throughout California.
This exhibition centers around the premise to revive Dali’s life story by showcasing his influence locally and capturing the rich history that ties him to the greater Monterey region.

About The Monterey Zoo
The 51-acre Vision Quest Ranch centrally located off the Monterey-Salinas Highway is the site of the Monterey Zoo, home to more than 100 wild, exotic and domestic birds and animals. It is also available for over-nighting at their Safari Bed & Breakfast and for special events. Monterey Zoo is dedicated to providing professionally and humanely trained wild/exotic and domestic birds and animals for film, television, live productions, education and much more. Monterey Zoo takes great pride in offering sanctuary to many animals that can no longer participate in entertainment or would otherwise not have a home or family. They have adopted many of our animals from situations that were less than ideal for their health and well-being. They have found ways to share them with others on our tours and educational programs that are fun, safe and rewarding to all.
The Monterey Zoological Society is raising funds and developing the remaining unused portions of the 51 acre ranch, constructing large, modern natural open paddock style enclosures as seen in most US zoos today for the larger animals able to be housed in. After relocating those animals to their new enclosures, they will remodel the existing facility where all the animals were, offering the free remaining space to all the smaller animals which in turn would tremendously amplify the size and atmosphere of their enclosures. The final goal will afford the Monterey County community their first real zoo providing a much needed source of educational family entertainment. For more information, go to montereyzoo.com.
